With heavy hearts we announce Brother Scott Wheeler's passing on June 20, 2020, at age 79, after a valiant battle with Parkinson’s disease. A beloved husband, brother, father and grandfather, Scott is survived by his wife of 56 years, Virginia Ann (née Johnson) Wheeler; one brother Roger Lynn Wheeler (Carolyn) of Grove City, Ohio; three daughters, Mary Elizabeth Wheeler of Cincinnati, Ohio, Kathryn Ann Janini (Thomas) of Medina, Ohio, Laura Kay Organisciak (Gregory) of Cincinnati, Ohio; five grandchildren, Scott Peter Schap (Wheeler), Jacob Gregory Organisciak, William Arthur Organisciak, Laura Kathryn Schap (Wheeler) and Anna Kathryn Organisciak; and several nieces and nephews.  Naples, FL – Edward John Graf, 91, of Naples, FL, went home to begin eternity with the Lord on June 17, 2020. He was born on March 25, 1929, in Lancaster, OH, to Rose Bush Graf and Frank T. Graf. His four years at The Ohio State University were highlighted by serving as President of Sigma Pi Fraternity and meeting his future wife of 67 years, Betty Washburn, in his business classes. Ed loved sporting the scarlet and gray and never passed up the opportunity to cheer on his beloved Buckeyes with friends. His ability to connect with people led to a successful career in magazine advertising with LIFE, House & Garden, Better Homes & Gardens, and Traditional Home. With country club memberships in hometowns of Park Ridge, IL; Roswell, GA at Horseshoe Bend CC; and Audubon CC in Naples, FL, Ed honed his golf skills and succeeded in hitting three holes in one throughout his life! Two other memberships near and dear to his heart were those at Park Ridge Community Church and Naples United Church of Christ. A good-looking guy who always looked younger than his years, he was a popular partner on the dance floor. His charm put others at ease and resulted in numerous long-lasting friendships. He loved to travel, play bridge and bocce, and enjoyed singing with the Belles and Beaus group at Bentley Village Retirement Community where he and Betty spent the last five years of his life. He loved antique cars, owned two, and was an active member of the Naples Antique Car Club for many years. Ed is survived by his wife, Betty Washburn Graf; daughter, Cynthia Graf Andrews (Tim) of Denver, CO; son, Robert Scott Graf (Renee) of Cary, IL; grandchildren, Christie Andrews Markvart (Jan), CJ Andrews, Scott Graf (Maggie), Jackie Graf, and Andrew Graf; his sister, Jean Windesheim of Pataskala, OH; and several nieces and nephews. His gentle way will be missed by all who knew him. Due to the pandemic, no service will be held at this time, but if one were, it would be highlighted by songs such as When the Saints Go Marching In and other favorite Dixieland jazz tunes! BROTHER STEVE SYFERT, March 12, 1943 - March 31, 2020

Steven Thomas Syfert of Fort Washington PA passed away March 31 from the long-term effects of dementia. He was 77 years old. The last year and three months, he was under the care of Pathways Memory Care at Blue Bell Place PA and his last eight months of care was also overseen by Kindred Hospice.

Steve is survived by his wife Shirley, his daughter Stephanie, son-in-law Aaron, grandsons Calvin (6) and Arlo (3), his son Bret and daughter-in-law Dorota, sister Cynthia and sister-in-law Donna.

Born in Columbus OH, Steve graduated from Ohio State University with a B.S. in Political Science. He formed three lifelong friendships there: Donald Melnykevich, Gary Glass, and Jerry Kundla.

He was in the Peace Corps in the Philippines after college and upon his return to the United States, Steve became an equity and then a municipal bond salesman in Philadelphia for the rest of his professional life. He felt fortunate to have made many great friendships in his industry.

His affiliation with the Shawnee Indians and the Rabelasian Society, both organizations associated with the financial community but primarily social and fun, brought him lasting friendships and fond memories. Sailing on the Chesapeake Bay on his sloop Tangaroa with his family and friends and playing golf were his two great passions. Nothing brought him more joy than making everyone around him feel cared for, encouraged, and entertained.

The family would like you to know that during his last few years, his memory may have been challenged, but not his affection toward others and pleasant disposition.

Steve wanted a farewell party to be enjoyed after his passing. When it is safe to gather, we will plan a gathering.

Thomas C. Sawyer, of Chicago and formerly of Worthington, OH, and Oakton, Virginia, died after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease on Tuesday, February 18. Born in Chicago on June 25, 1945, he was the son of the late Charles L. Sawyer and Frances Sawyer. Although Tom spent his early years in Western Springs, IL, his family later moved to the suburbs of Columbus, and he graduated from Worthington High School in 1963 and entered the Ohio State University. During his undergraduate experience, Tom was class president, became a member of Bucket and Dipper and Sphinx. He was president of the Ohio Staters, president of Freshman Senate, and pledge president of Sigma Pi. His passion for the merging of politics and media were born out of this period as were many of the close relationships that he fostered for the rest of his life. During his graduate school years, he worked for and was mentored by OSU President Novice G. Fawcett and Vice President of Student Affairs John Mount which played important roles in his future professional life. He ultimately completed his doctorate at Ohio State while simultaneously co-authoring three books, one of which became a staple in Communications 101 classes around the country for many years, ‟Speech Communication Now!” Although Tom had initially set his sights on a life in academia, the pull of politics brought him to Washington multiple times over the course of his life. He began his career as minority counsel to the US House of Representatives Communications Subcommittee while also balancing commitments to the US Army. He received the award of Distinguished Military Graduate from Ft. Meade in 1971 due to displaying outstanding qualities of leadership, noteworthy academic achievement and exceptional aptitude for military service. During this period, Tom married Deborah Sutter and they began their forty-eight year adventure. Tom returned to Ohio in 1975 to become Executive Vice President of the Ohio Association of Broadcasters, and during his tenure formed the National Association of State Broadcast Executives. This work led him to become Vice President of Washington Operations at NBC where he remained for several years. Although Tom had many career highlights, he took his greatest pride in the personal and professional achievements of his three children: Courtney, Kathryn and Scott. He enjoyed exceptionally close relationships with his kids and valued his time with them over anything else. Tom and his family returned to Columbus as he became executive vice president of Paul Werth Associates, then branched out and created his own public affairs consulting firm, Opinion Strategies, in 1996. Higher education was always his passion and from 1972-2009, he found opportunities to teach classes at Ohio State, Franklin University, George Washington University, and Harvard University. However, his heart was always with OSU. He served three terms on the President’s Alumni Council and was elected to the Board of Directors, serving as its chair for two years. During this time, the board designed a strategic plan for the OSUAA, increased the Advocates program from 200 to 1,000, and significantly advanced Alumni Teaching Awards. One day, when asked by a student publication what advice he would have for today’s college students, he replied: ‟Value human relationships to their fullest.” This was the motto Tom lived every day of his life. During the last few years, as his disease took a dramatic toll, Tom found great joy and comfort in his grandchildren: Jimmy, Blake, Jack, and his namesake, Thomas (Teddy). He was grateful for every moment with them. Tom is also survived by his sons-in-law, Curtis Rund and Mark Carrillo; daughter-in law, Jamie Sawyer; mother-in-law, Patricia Sutter; and numerous members of the Sutter and Smith families. His sister Barbara Sawyer Hanes predeceased him. A memorial service honoring Tom’s life will be held at Worthington Presbyterian Church, 773 N. High Street, on Friday, April 3, at 11 AM. All are invited to attend a reception immediately following the service.

SHREWSBURY, Vermont — Our father was a man who liked to noodle things on his own when big decisions were to be made. We loved that he researched and figured, using the available wisdom to make good, slow, long plan decisions. His standards were high and if what you were doing was not up to snuff, he was not interested. We see examples of how we have taken this to heart as we reflect on our own lives, and consciously raised the bar. Thank you, Dad. Two Sicilian immigrants, Calogero Calotta and Giuseppa Leale Calotta, met and married happily in America. Landing with their wiles to make a better life, they found jobs and grew a family of five children in Williamsburg Brooklyn, New York. Dad delighted in childhood stories: how, at 6, he skipped school for an entire month to perfect his marble game; and how he did not like how a particular nun spoke to him and he swung at her, hitting all habit; how the families in the neighborhood made their own wine, and some ladies would sell it in the afternoon for 5 cents a cup. He had a strong spirit. As photos from his teen and young adult years reveal, he grew into a handsome and smart dressing man. Stories of a charmer, dancer, traveler and foodie floated though our life. ROTC provided the education he was after: Ohio State for a BS, president of Sigma Pi and Glee Club, then Yale University for an MBA on fellowships. He landed at Coventry Development where he spent the next 38 years as president steering their business to great success. On an Eastern flight to Houston, he met Carol Davenport, a flight attendant beauty, who helped relieve him of a splinter midflight. Thinking about that now, how does one acquire a splinter in a plane? The two fell in love, marrying in 1970 and buying the TipTop Inn in Shrewsbury, Vermont, to run seasonally. Dad was a project man and this project became his dream, demanding that he learn all kinds of skills his city life never had. The Big Gun (his boardroom nickname) brought the same zest and zeal to learning to brush hog the meadows, ‘harvesting rocks’ to build rock walls, and the 10-year renovation of the inn that resurrected as his glorious Crisanver House. Tireless work and a to-do list that would make some faint, fueled his health and made him strong as an ox. In 2001, he retired from the hubbub of Manhattan, to his beloved inn. The joy was tangible as he invited guests into his empire to share delicious food our mother cooked, and limoncello that mom had mastered making; he gleamed with pride. Regaling with stories, curating the jazz selections, opera or classical music for the evening, dad loved to host. It was the perfect, endless project love affair, challenging him to learn and invest and figure and haggle and pour his bountiful energy and wisdom into. This is where his ashes will be spread on Sunday, June 28, and he will truly rest in peace, continuing to nourish the land he loved so well. He passed surrounded by the love and deep gratitude of his daughters, Cristina and Andrea, his son-in-law, Alain, and his wife, Carol, who kissed and cried their goodbyes with wishes and prayers for a graceful and beautiful next leg of the journey. He is survived by Carol; Cristina and husband Richard, Andrea and husband Alain; four grandchildren, two step-grandchildren; his brother, Charles Calotta; dozens of nieces and nephews and family in Sicily. Please remember him for his beautiful blue eyes, word pun jokes, belting out opera or Sinatra on the tractor, ability to do math like a calculator, unhurried noodling wisdom, playing like a kid with his grandchildren, for his quietly fierce and loyal love, and when you watch the colorful sunsets in the Green Mountains.

SALEM - Erick Lee Theiss, 77, died Friday, January 17, 2020 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center. He was born July 19, 1942 in Canton, son of the late Daniel Theiss and Louise (Pochubay) Theiss. Erick was a 1960 graduate of Salem Senior High School. He attended The Ohio State University where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Horticulture in 1964. While there, Erick was a member of the Sigma Pi Fraternity and more recently an active board member in the Alumni Chapter in Columbus. Erick was also a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church. He was an avid Ohio State football fan and also enjoyed golfing and fishing. Erick was a veteran of the United States Army during the Vietnam War, retiring as a Captain in 1967. He is survived by his wife, the former Maryann Bricker, whom he married April 24, 1965; three children, Christopher (Kimberly) of Aurora, IL, Elizabeth Theiss of Dublin, and Andrew Theiss of Columbus; two sisters, Jean (Richard) Chamberlain of Poland and Jane (Robert) Jones of Brighton, MI; and two grandchildren, Daniel and Audrey. A memorial service is being planned for Saturday, February 8, 2020 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Salem.  Service will begin at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Alan Smearsoll officiating. Dr. Gary D. Parson D.D.S., age 71, of Mount Vernon, passed away September 4, 2019 at St. Ann's Hospital. He was born on July 11, 1948 in Bloomington, Illinois to Clarence and Barbara (Baker) Parson. Gary graduated from The Ohio State University 1968-1970 B.S. degree, Ohio State Dental School 1970-1974 DDS Degree, he was a member of the Sigma Pi Fraternity where he was a Past President and member of the Dental Honorary Fraternity, member of the YMCA Board of Directors, member and past President of the Knox County Big Brothers Big Sisters, member and past President of the Knox County Head Start board of Directors; member and past President of the Jaycees Chamber of Commerce, member of the American Dental Association, Ohio Dental Association, W. D. Gordon HAAS Obituary HAAS, Gordon L. Age 78, of Kettering, OH, passed away on August 16, 2019. Gordon was born October 18, 1940 to Willard and Eva (Cherry Holmes) Haas in Akron, OH. He was a graduate of Cuyahoga Falls H.S. in 1958 and went on to graduate with a degree in Mechanical Engineering from The Ohio State University in 1963, where he was a member of the Sigma Pi fraternity. Gordon was a long-time employee at Systems Research Laboratory. He attended Christ United Methodist Church and enjoyed golf, trains, and OSU football. Gordon was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Carol Esser. He is survived by his family, Betsy, John, Aimee, and Leanne Haas; sisters, Phyllis and Sandra; and many nieces and nephews. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 21 at Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 E. Stroop Rd. from 5:00-6:30pm. A memorial service will be held following the visitation at 6:30pm.  A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Major Robert Paul Abel II, U.S. Army Retired, 75, of New Albany, formerly a 40-yr. resident of Granville and Newark, will be held at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 11:00 A.M., Monday, July 1, 2019, with Fr. Joseph Labak as celebrant. Interment with military honors will be held in the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, 9:30 A.M., Wednesday, July 3, 2019. Bob died at Riverside Methodist Hospital on Tuesday, June 25, 2019. He was born in Barberton, Ohio on June 28, 1943 to the late Robert P. and Anne (Halas) Abel I. Devoted to his country and the military, Bob enlisted with the United States Army and was commissioned as an officer, March 1966. He retired as Major from the United States Army Reserves on June 28, 2003. He was an avid reader and often enjoyed books related to his country and world history. A graduate of Hoban High School, Akron, Bob received his BA in Business Administration from The Ohio State University, followed by his Masters in Finance from Xavier University. He worked for 30 years as Manager and Purchasing Agent with Kaiser Aluminum and was Past President of their Salaried Retirees Club. Bob was social by nature, and always enjoyed gathering with friends over a good meal. He was past president of his college fraternity, Sigma Pi, and active in the Columbus Alumni Club. Beginning with his time in the service, Bob had the opportunity to travel, a passion that he always had. Over the years, he and his wife traveled extensively through Europe, living in Germany for a period of time. He often visited the Caribbean, which became a special place where he enjoyed making lifelong memories with his family. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 52 years, Mary (Bilderback) Abel, his children, Alison (Jerry) Kirkpatrick, Rob (Jane) Abel, and Ryan (Hallie) Abel; five grandchildren, Liam Kirkpatrick, Ellie, Robby, Maeve, and Max Abel; sister, Carole (Michael) Farmer; sister-in-law, Joanne Payne; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. Alex R. Papagan, 78, of North Attleborough, MA passed away on June 8, 2019 surrounded by loving family. He leaves behind his wife of 33 years, Charlene Papagan. Born in Youngstown, OH on February 27, 1941, he was the son of the late Julia (Strak) and Harry “Buddy” Papagan. Alex grew up in Youngstown, OH where he attended Rayen High School, graduating in 1959. During that time he was very active in music, theater, student congress, and was President of The Debate Team, The Thespian Society, Junior Achievement and The National High School Forensic League. Alex attended The Ohio State University, graduating in 1963 with a Degree in Communications and Business. While at Ohio State, he was a member of The Men’s Glee Club, The Homecoming Committee, and Sigma Pi Fraternity. After college he began his business career working for Connecticut Mutual Insurance in Columbus, OH, followed by GF Business Equipment of Youngstown, OH. From 1967-1978 he worked for Polaroid Corporation in various executive positions. Within that time, his family relocated to New England, where he would spend the rest of his life. He later held positions as Vice President of Marketing for USTV Starcase, and Colony Communications (Providence Journal Co.) from 1980-1985. He was the General Manager of Dale Carnegie Training from 1985-1990. From 1990-1998 he was President and Owner of Voice-Tel of Southern New England. Since 2004 Alex has owned and operated A.R.Papagan Associates in Rumford, RI, where he was an independent licensed agent, specializing in advising and writing insurance policies for senior citizens’ health care needs. In addition to his extensive professional career, Alex also gave his time to various charity and community service organizations including Providence Chamber of Commerce, Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Program, MS Society of RI and Leadership Rhode Island. Alex was a life long avid golfer who enjoyed playing with friends at Pawtucket Country Club and Quidnessett Country Club. A natural performer, he enjoyed several years of involvement in community theater productions in his 20’s and 30’s. He was a fan of many sports, especially The New England Patriots and Ohio State Football. He loved to read, and listen to music. During his life, the talents and passions he had were passed down to his Children and Grandchildren. Nothing gave him greater joy than to see them participating in sports, music, and theater. In recent years, he was especially delighted and proud to watch his Grandchildren grow and share in their lives and activities. Besides his wife, Alex is survived by his children; Michelle Powers and her husband Michael Powers of West Greenwich, RI, Robin Mosher and her husband Ralph Mosher of Mendon, MA, Jason Papagan of Holly Springs, NC, and Jana Homer and her husband Paul Homer of Huntington, NY. He is also survived by two brothers; Harry G. Papagan of Lexington, KY and Kenneth M. Papagan of Los Angeles, CA. Known as “Grandpa Ouch” by his loving Grandchildren he leaves behind; Rutger and Rory Mosher, Nicholas, Nathaniel, Noelle and Nolan Powers, Winter and Colby Papagan, and Brady and Pierce Homer.  DUBLIN — Sherwyn G. Long, age 80, of Dublin, OH, formerly a long-time resident of Lima, OH, passed away Monday, May 27, 2019 at Sunrise Senior Living. Born in Dayton, OH to the late Audrey and Ray Long, Sherwyn was raised in Upper Arlington, OH and graduated from Upper Arlington High School, Class of 1956. He later graduated from The Ohio State University in 1960 and was a life-long and avid Buckeye! Sherwyn was a Purchasing Agent with Ford Motor Company and retired after nearly 40 years of service. He met the love of his life, Zoe, and they were married in 1963. Together they raised their family in Lima. Sherwyn was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife Zoe who passed in 2010. He is survived by his brother Roger (Sharon) Long of Punta Gorda, FL; his daughters: Pam (Tim) Lamb of Winter Garden, FL. William Sander Kjellstrand September 14, 1941 – March 1, 2019 Obituary KJELLSTRAND, William Sander(1941-2019) William "Big Bill" Kjellstrand of Austin, Texas, passed away peacefully on March 1, 2019, at the age of 77. He is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Leslie, and their daughters and husbands, Katherine and George Burns, Sarah and Andrew Buckles, and Elizabeth and Shane Hartwig. He also leaves seven grandchildren: Savannah, Gloria and Eleanor Burns; Abigail and Lindsay Buckles; and Thomas and Grace Shafer. Bill also is survived by his cousin Diane and her husband, LeRoy Shouse, and several other cousins. Bill was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on Sept. 14, 1941, to Arthur and Marie (Haffey) Kjellstrand. He grew up in Lakewood, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland. He graduated from The Ohio State University with a B.A. in political science. While at Ohio State, he joined Sigma Pi fraternity, and many of his fraternity brothers have remained lifelong friends. In 1982, he and his family moved to Austin, where he worked for the Austin American-Statesman for 24 years. He earned an M.A. in journalism from The University of Texas at Austin. Bill loved to travel and was a lifelong learner of music, art, theology and history. A memorial service will be held on March 9, 2019, at 2 p.m. at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 8134 Mesa Drive, Austin, Texas. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifts be made in Bill's name to the St. Matthew's Permanent Endowment Fund and the Austin Graduate School of Theology.

Kenneth Bradley Bordwell, 75, passed away unexpectedly but peacefully from a heart attack on October 30, 2017, at his home in Cincinnati. Ken was born in Dayton, Ohio on February 1, 1942, to Dr. Bradley Hobart and Katherine Lucille Bordwell. Ken was a supporter of social and racial justice from boyhood. He became a volunteer with the Peace Corps and from 1966 to 1968 worked on literacy and community development in Brazil. Ken retired in 2002 after a long career as a community development worker for the City of Cincinnati. He was a 39-year active member of the fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous. He attended New Thought Unity Center before joining the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers); he was a valued member of Community Friends Meeting for 17 years. For years he lobbied for the Friends Committee on National Legislation, Bread for the World, and Ohioans to Stop Executions. He served on the Boards of the Metropolitan Area Religious Coalition of Cincinnati and Over the Rhine Community Housing. For 20 years he has participated with The American Council of the Blind of Ohio, enjoying winter sports with people with visual impairment. Ken loved opera and was a member of the American Handel Society. He took up hiking 40 years ago, and on August 24, 2012, at 70 years of age he completed his goal of hiking the entire Appalachian Trail. He also enjoyed bicycling and had a number of remarkable rides in the United States and Ireland. Ken is survived by his wife Mary Anne Curtiss; three daughters: Carolyn Rospierski of Houston TX (Charlie), Katherine Flenniken of Portland, OR (Greg), and Victoria Bordwell of Cincinnati (fiance James Coleman). He is also survived by his four grandchildren: Madeline, Daniel, Liam and Nora, and his sister Sue Ellen Bordwell of Yarmouth, Maine (partner Bill Richards), as well as three stepsons and two former wives, now friends. A memorial service will be held from 10 AM to 12 noon on Wednesday, November 22, 2017, at the St. Peter in Chains Cathedral Undercroft in downtown Cincinnati (enter on 8th Street). F. Duane Butler

July 4, 1943 - February 6, 2016

F. Duane Butler, 72, of Worthington, Ohio, died Saturday, February 6, 2016, at Riverside Methodist Hospital. He was born July 4, 1943, in Montgomery, Ohio to Forest and Ruth Butler. He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1961 where he was active in football, basketball, and track. Duane graduated from The Ohio State University in 1967 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. He taught math and science as well as coached Freshmen Football at Olentangy High School. Later he taught Mathematics at the original Worthington High School and was the Ski Club Advisor. He was one of the founders and teachers of the Worthington High School Alternative Program in Linworth. He ended his career as Dean of Students at Thomas Worthington High School. He is survived by his loving wife, Jeanette; daughters, Tracy Coe and Tricia (Steve) Kolwicz; his wonderful grandchildren, Elle and Eve Coe, Alice and Joe Kolwicz; sister, Diane (Bob) Moore and brother, R. Richard (Elaine) Butler; numerous friends and relatives. Duane loved his family, The OSU Buckeyes, traveling with the love of his life Jeanette and Scuba Diving. Edmund Leo Fochtman, Jr., age 77, of Phoenix, AZ, passed away on October 2, 2014. He was born on June 3, 1937, in the city of Akron, Ohio. Born to Edmund and Dorothy (Cahall) Fochtman, both deceased. He is a graduate of The Ohio State University with a business degree and was a passionate Bucks fan throughout his life. He began his career in Cleveland, Ohio, as a stockbroker with Merrill Lynch. He arrived in Arizona in 1976 and was Vice President of F & W Associates, one of the first manufacturers of mini cars, the engine-driven mini cars for children. Ed moved on to help establish a very successful restaurant group: Steamers Seafood Restaurant, Bobby McGee's, and Buster's Restaurant. He was deeply loved by his wife, Elaine (Reder) Fochtman, his partner in life for 55 years. He is survived by his wife Elaine, son Edmund L. Fochtman, III, grandchildren Brittany and Ryan Fochtman, sister Marianne Cartee of Apopka, Florida, brother James (deceased), sister, Margaret Jo (deceased), niece Corrina & Eric of Florida, niece Dawn of Phoenix, and three very special people in his life, Deborah Gold of Parkersburg, WV, Lori Stenger of North Olmsted, OH, and Scott Volosin of Chandler, AZ.
